Hockey School – Week 7

by on Feb.28, 2009, under Elizabeth

This week was a much better week than the last two.  Elizabeth, while still a little sleepy, went out and skated and participated with the other kids as much as she could.  She stayed out the entire session this time and was in good spirits, laughing and having a good time with the other students and instructors.

Next week is the last week and she will take a little bit of a break.  The next session starts in April but she’ll be visiting with family throughout a lot of that time so she’ll either miss the next session or only do the second half.

Pool update

by on Feb.24, 2009, under Damon

This past weekend I played in a local singles qualifier for the APA.  They hold local qualifier tournaments with up to 8 people per bracket to get players for the regional qualifier that is held twice a year.  If you win the local then you get to play in the regional for a chance to go to Las Vegas and play for money.  This weekend I won the local qualifier and will get to play in the regional in October.

I’ve played in the regional twice before, once in 2008 and once in 2007.  In 2007 I placed 2nd and in 2008 I placed 3rd, losing to the eventual winner.  Hopefully I can turn it around this year and win it.

Hockey School – Week 6

by on Feb.24, 2009, under Elizabeth

Elizabeth had another week of hockey school and unfortunately, this class didn’t go as well as previous weeks.  Elizabeth didn’t want to go to bed on Friday night and was very tired and cranky on Saturday morning.  When she woke up she didn’t even want to eat, so partway through class she decided she was done and didn’t want to participate anymore.  We took her off the ice and while she was sitting on the bench she made friends with another little girl named Olivia who wasn’t in the class but had a brother who was.  Olivia had some Fig Newtons and offered them to Elizabeth, who promptly scarfed them down.  Again proving that breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. 🙂

We will try again next week.  We are also considering holding her out of the next round of classes because of the amount of time Elizabeth will be gone on vacation and doing other activities.  The classes are only 8 weeks and she’s going to miss at least 4 of them.  I’ll still be able to take her out from time to time at public rinks to keep her skating and she can rejoin the class in the next session, so it’s not a huge deal.

Lots of traveling this year

by on Feb.18, 2009, under General

Evie and I have been working hard to plan out a few trips and events for the year.  The first two are coming in March and April when Evie, Elizabeth and Catherine head to Michigan to visit with Evie’s family and friends.  Evie and Catherine will come back and give Elizabeth some one on one time with the family up in Michigan before coming back with Evie’s mom, step-dad and aunt.  They’re coming to Texas to see Catherine’s dedication that we’re planning for Easter.

The following week Evie, Elizabeth, Catherine, my mom and I are all going to Italy to meet and visit with my family.  My father, his wife, my sister and brother all live there and we will get to meet for the first time.

In September, for Elizabeth’s birthday we’re planning a trip to Disney World in Florida.  Evie’s cousin Megan, her husband Al and their children will be joining us for that as well.  It’s also possible that some other family members may join us too.

In October, currently our final planned trip is to go to Lubbock, Texas to help our friends Keith and Alisha get married.  I will be one of the best men, Evie will be one of two matrons of honor and Elizabeth will be a flower girl.

Depending on timing and funding we may also visit Michigan for Christmas, but that is still up in the air.  All in all it will be a very busy year even without this trip.

Hockey School…kinda

by on Feb.14, 2009, under Elizabeth

Elizabeth and I showed up at hockey school this morning to discover that there wasn’t a class scheduled for today.  Due to a tournament the coaches weren’t available to teach today so they put a hole in the schedule.  One of the coaches who wasn’t in the tournament showed up because he had forgotten that there wasn’t school today and since the ice was open for stick and puck he decided to take a couple of the kids that showed up (we weren’t the only ones) out for just some fun time on the ice.  It was probably a good thing that today wasn’t a real class.  Elizabeth was tired and not really into it and even though she did get out and skate for a while, she was really tired and just wanted to go home by the end of it.  She did skate well though and definitely isn’t afraid to be out on the ice anymore.

Happy Birthday Catherine

by on Feb.11, 2009, under Catherine

Catherine turned three months old today!  She’s progressing along very well, even able to sit up for a couple of seconds before falling over.  She likes to watch what is going on around her and wants to be upright when being held most of the time.  No doctor’s visit this month but she’s visibly growing well, despite spitting up a lot of her food after she eats.  She’s doing a lot of smiling and laughing and interacting with people and has rolling over (both ways) down to a science now.  Her eyes are still bluish and I think they will wind up being either a very pretty pale blue or a hazel color like Evie.

Busy weekend

by on Feb.08, 2009, under Elizabeth

In addition to Elizabeth having Hockey School Saturday morning we also had some other activities this weeked.  Saturday afternoon we attempted to take Elizabeth to meet Marty Turco, who is the goalie for the Dallas Stars, but unfortunately the line was too long and we didn’t get up to meet him.  Elizabeth did get to see him, but wasn’t able to get his autograph or a photo with him.  We took pictures at a distance and she did get her picture taken with the Ice Girls and got to play in a bounce house they had setup outside.

Sunday Evie and the girls went to church and then had some time together before we went to Chuck E Cheese’s for a birthday party for one of Elizabeth’s classmates, Jaidyn, who turns 4 on Tuesday.  She had a lot of fun playing games and dancing with her friends.  I’ll start posting pictures later this week.

Hockey School Week 5

by on Feb.08, 2009, under Elizabeth

Elizabeth picked up right where she left off last week.  She went out on the ice unassisted and skated the entire lesson without a chair and only minor assistance from the coaches.  She needs to work on getting back up after falling, but once she gets that down she’ll ok.  This week was also special because my mom came to watch Elizabeth for the first time.  Elizabeth seems to really like going so there will be more updates to come.
